Our Proud HISTORY

1905

William Twigg founded the company in 1905, and made his name in the 1920s and 30s in recycling projects, purchasing and dismantling mine works and largescale buildings to recycle the component elements and machinery for profit.

Our Proud HISTORY

1930s

The steelyard was established on the company’s current site on Bakewell Road in Matlock in the 1930s, overseen by engineer Dennis Upton. In 1934, Harry Allen joined the company and developed the Engineers’ Stores; Allen went on to marry Twigg’s only daughter Doris.

Our Proud HISTORY

1958

William Twigg died in 1958, leaving Doris, Harry and Dennis to lead the business. David Allen, William’s grandson, and his wife Sheila are both currently Directors and David’s son-in-law, Richard Tarbatt, is Managing Director.

Our Proud HISTORY

2005

The company celebrated its centenary in 2005 and donated £100,000 to local charities during the year. Across the three divisions of the business Twiggs is proud to continue supplying thousands of customers with steel stock, fabricated steel and engineering items from Matlock to Antarctica.
